Former Mayor of Shenzhen on Monday (9 / 5) sentenced to death for accepting bribes. This case is considered very tarnished the image of Shenzhen as one of the most developed economic zone in southern China.
The court in Henan Province Xu sentenced to death for accepting bribes Zonghen more than 33 million yuan, or about 4 million U.S. dollars. Xu is one of the most senior officials in China who was sentenced after the previous leader of the Communist Party of China in Shanghai, Chen Liangyu, was jailed for corruption in 2008.
Xu (56) was dismissed from his post as mayor of Shenzhen in June 2009, by reason of breach of discipline. In that year also Xu, who had qualified the car, thrown into prison.
He finally found accepting bribes after a vigorous central government carry out an audit to find out who has received gifts in Shenzhen. Shenzhen is only a stone's throw away from Hong Kong.
The court also said Xu had been abusing his power. He is also seeking its own advantage by helping the nine companies or individuals who want to build a city, won the project for a particular person, or accept bribes from officials who want to promote.
The death penalty was previously was delayed up to two years for Xu admitted his guilt.
Xu known to receive bribes from the company for building materials suppliers and its officials between 2001 and 2009. At that time he has not served the mayor, but still one of high officials in Shenzhen. Apparently after he became mayor in 2005, bribes flowed to meet his pocket.

A generation ago, Shenzhen was a fishing village slums. In the last 30 years the area developed into a metropolitan city with a population of 11 million inhabitants. Shenzhen also grew into one of the special economic zones and is China's development model that relies on manufacturing. However, corruption cases have reflected the bleak side of the reforms undertaken in China.
Chinese President Hu Jintao and other top government officials repeatedly stated that the corruption that became endemic in China is a threat to the legitimacy of the Communist Party.
Chinese Communist Party has repeatedly tried to combat corruption. Economic development has made the officials a chance to use their powers to enrich themselves.
However, there is criticism that the effort to root out corruption in China is also tripping with less independent judiciary. Combating corruption in China, especially in Guangdong Province, is seen by analysts as one of Beijing's efforts to strengthen its control in the economic zone in southern China.
