Damiano Tommasi has been named president of the Associazione Italiana Calciatori (AIC) - the Italian Footballers' Association as he takes the place of Sergio Campana.

The former Roma and Italy midfielder will be confirmed the association's new leader on May 9.

"It's a great responsibility and I wanted to make the step from being an advisor, to being the president," Tommasi told Il Corriere dello Sport.

"The tough task now will be the guarantee of funds for smaller teams."

Tommasi replaces Campana who announced he would be stepping down from his position last week.

It was Campana who founded the AIC in 1968 and will leave after 43 years at the helm. The 76-year-old established the AIC alongside players such as Gianni Rivera, and Sandro Mazzola.

Some measures established by the AIC during Campana's time in charge include freedom at the end of contracts, and social security.
